SAFE SNOW SHOVELING




Well, it looks like we're having a real winter in New Jersey this year! Snow makes everything look beautiful. If you are shoveling, please read and  do the following:



DO

1. Dress warmly in light layers of loose clothing. Wear a hat, gloves and galoshes or boots.       Remove outer layers as you warm up.

2. Shovel down hills and steps.

3. Bend from knees and hips. Keep your elbows close to your body.

4. Use a push-scoop type shovel for light snowfall.

5. Alternate sides--right and left--tossing snow. Keep your elbows close to your

body while tossing snow.

6. Remember to clear fire hydrants.

7. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids before and after to avoid dehydration.

8. STOP IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHEST PAIN.

DON'T


1. Don't smoke.

2. Don't drink alcohol.

3. Don't bend from the waist.

4. Don't twist to toss snow.

5. Don't overfill the shovel, especially with wet snow.

6. Don't rush--shoveling is a whole body endeavor.

7. Don't shovel if you have a history of heart disease or low back problems.
