What To Make Instead Of Resolutions To Have a Great New Year!

Most people make resolutions each year on January 1st. Here are a few of the health goals that my patients shared on the white board in one of our treatment rooms years ago:
Admirable list! Here’s the challenge, if success is measured by achieving them then resolutions too often don’t work. Worse, we feel a sense of failure and even shame as if it’s a character flaw.
So what to do? Simple, don’t make goals or resolutions. Instead, make promises.
If you make a promise the odds are much greater that you’ll do it. If you break a resolution or don’t make a goal, you’ll feel disappointed. If you break a promise, it hurts. Why? It’s just the way we human beings are built (most of us anyway). Your word is your bond, even to yourself. Even more to someone else.
For example, which statement has more impact:
“My goal is to lose 10 pounds by March 1st.”
“I promise to lose 10 pounds by March 1st.”
Keeping promises also gives you a feeling of pride and honor. Who among us doesn’t want to be known as, “Someone of their word”, or “A stand up person”? And, if you need help or support, who wouldn’t want to help someone keep their word?
If your are a patient or friend of mine and you want someone to witness your promise or help keep you accountable, I am more than willing to do so. That, I promise.

Bodyweight and Cancer

Excess body weight accounted for approximately 3.9% of all cancers worldwide in 2012. That trend is not looking to improve as portion sizes are increasing. Another study showed that 94 percent of meals from full service restaurants and 72 percent of fast food meals across all countries studied contained high calories - 600 calories or more.

In 2016, approximately 40% of adults and 18% of children (ages 5-19 years) had excess body weight.

Overweight and obesity has been linked to an increased risk of 13 cancers, including: cancers of the breast (postmenopausal), colon and rectum (colorectal), esophagus, gallbladder, kidney, liver, ovary, pancreas, stomach, and thyroid. Further, recent sudies show a probable increase from being overweight in meningioma, multiple myeloma and cancers of the prostate, mouth, pharynx, and larynx.

12,000 New Hampshire residents aged 18-99 with low back pain were studied and found that those who received chiropractic services had less harm and bad effects from medication use, according to a recent study.  They had a significantly lower risk of getting an opioid prescribed.

Back Pain in Teens Linked to Substance Use and Mental Health Issues

Image result for teen pain back free

Teens with back pain are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, and face mental problems such as anxiety and depression, reports a new study. The findings of the study are published in the Journal of Public Health

The findings showed that with increased frequency of pain the proportion of participants reporting increased smoking, drinking, and absence from school.

Key findings:

~ Students that experienced pain more than once a week were around twice as likely to have missed school in the previous term.

14- to-15-year-olds who experienced pain more than once a week were two-to-three times more likely to have drunk alcohol or smoked in the past month than those who rarely or never had pain.

This should be a reminder not to dismiss the teens complaining of pain as 'trivial or fleeting'

Chiropractic care can help.

A study earlier this year showed that teens with chronic back pain undergoing 12 weeks of spinal manipulation (adjustments) and exercise do better than exercise alone. The relief lasted over a year's time.

Chiropractic Adjustments For Shoulder Conditions

The effectiveness of Chiropractic adjustments to the spine and shoulder have been shown in numerous research studies to help many shoulder conditions. I will be teaching upcoming seminars for doctors and Chiropractic students at Parker Seminars, Dallas, TX. on October 5th for: Shoulder Adjustments That Work -Adjusting the Shoulder Complex. These are the techniques that I have used to help thousands of patients over the past 30+ years in practice.

Injections For Back Pain Is Risky. Try This Instead

Injections of anti-inflammatory drugs are are potentially dangerous and ineffective. A recent New York Times article pointed this out as a growing trend for patients with chronic low back pain. After Doctors Cut Their Opioids, Patients Turn to a Risky Treatment for Back Pain

One of the least risky and most effeactive treatments for patients with back pain is spinal manipulation and mobilization, and tailored specific exercise programs by Chiropractors.

12,000 New Hampshire residents aged 18-99 with low back pain were studied and found that those who received chiropractic services had less harm and bad effects from medication use, according to a recent study.  They had a 55% less likelihood of filling an Opioid prescription!
