SAFE SNOW SHOVELING

Well, it looks like we're having a real winter in New Jersey this year! Snow makes everything look beautiful. If you are shoveling, please read and  do the following:

DO

1. Dress warmly in light layers of loose clothing. Wear a hat, gloves and galoshes or boots.       Remove outer layers as you warm up.

2. Shovel down hills and steps.

3. Bend from knees and hips. Keep your elbows close to your body.

4. Use a push-scoop type shovel for light snowfall.

5. Alternate sides--right and left--tossing snow. Keep your elbows close to your

body while tossing snow.

6. Remember to clear fire hydrants.

7. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids before and after to avoid dehydration.

8. STOP IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHEST PAIN.

DON'T

1. Don't smoke.

2. Don't drink alcohol.

3. Don't bend from the waist.

4. Don't twist to toss snow.

5. Don't overfill the shovel, especially with wet snow.

6. Don't rush--shoveling is a whole body endeavor.

7. Don't shovel if you have a history of heart disease or low back problems.

Medication Cascade

This shirt is funny, and a little sad. When I do consultations for new patients I am frequently surprised at how many medications the people who come to see me are on, and how many of them are to treat the symptoms of the side effects of another drug.

Medications can cause other conditions unrelated to the health problems they're prescribed to treat. Unaware of this, patients very often consult their medical doctors about this "new" condition — only to be prescribed yet another drug that could produce still more side effects. It's a cascade that goes on and on until the causes of their symptoms are addressed.

One of my goals when working with patients is to get them healthy enough to need very little, if any, medication. Treatments should be natural first, drugs second, and surgery last.

CHILDREN'S HEADACHES MAY BE HELPED BY CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS

CHILDREN'S HEADACHES MAY BE HELPED BY CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS
New research shows headaches in children may come from the neck (a.k.a. Cervicogenic Headache). Previous research has found that Chiropractic spinal adjustments and exercise is safe and effective for treating Cervicogenic headache, without the use of pain medications. These options may be especially beneficial to parents who want to help their children with their pain but also want to avoid the side effects of drugs.
