Mental Attitude: Joy of Giving Lasts Longer Than That of Getting. The happiness we feel after a particular event typically diminishes each time we experience that event, but two new studies suggest that giving to others may be the exception to the rule. In the studies, researchers found that participants' happiness did not decline, or declined much slower, when they repeatedly bestowed gifts on others compared to repeatedly receiving the same gifts themselves. Psychological Science, December 2018

Health Alert: Mid-Life Exercise and Stroke Risk… According to a new study, the fitness decisions you make in middle age can dramatically affect your stroke risk later in life. In the study, researchers measured the fitness levels of over 2,000 middle-aged adults in the early 1970s and again seven years later. They discovered that compared with participants who became unfit over time, those who stayed in shape or started exercising were about 60% less likely to suffer a stroke over the next 35 years. Stroke, December 2018

Diet: Fish Oil Consumption May Not Increase Bleeding Risk During Surgery. Surgeons generally advise patients to reduce their omega-3 fatty acid intake before undergoing a procedure in order to reduce the risk of bleeding. However, a new surgery that involved 1,516 patients found that those given a fish oil supplement in the five days preceding a major heart operation had a lower risk of serious bleeding, and for those who did require a transfusion, less blood was needed. The researchers conclude, “These novel findings support the need for reconsideration of current recommendations to stop fish oil or delay procedures before cardiac surgery.” Circulation. Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, November 2018

Exercise: Walking May Benefit an Aging Brain. In a new study, researchers observed that older adults who engaged in walking or another form of moderate exercise for 35 minutes a day three times a week for six months experienced significant improvements with respect to their executive function skills. Neurology, December 2018

Chiropractic: Lumbar MRI Often Unnecessary. Lower back pain is a significant health problem worldwide, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used to aid in diagnosis, but a chart review of 313 patients revealed that 41.5% of MRIs were unnecessary based on clinical guidelines. The finding suggests that physician training is needed to reduce unnecessary imaging and expenditures. Neurospine, October 2018

Wellness/Prevention: Higher Beta-Carotene Levels May Promote Longevity… The results of a 30-year study involving over 29,000 men suggest that individuals with higher beta-carotene serum levels may have a significantly reduced risk for death from cardiovascular disease, heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory disease, and diabetes mellitus. The most common source of beta-carotene in the American diet is carrots; however, other dietary sources of beta-carotene include sweet potatoes, butternut squash, dark leafy greens, broccoli, red bell peppers, cantaloupe, lettuce, peas, and apricots. Circulation Research, December 2018

What To Make Instead Of Resolutions To Have a Great New Year!

Most people make resolutions each year on January 1st. Here are a few of the health goals that my patients shared on the white board in one of our treatment rooms years ago:
Admirable list! Here’s the challenge, if success is measured by achieving them then resolutions too often don’t work. Worse, we feel a sense of failure and even shame as if it’s a character flaw.
So what to do? Simple, don’t make goals or resolutions. Instead, make promises.
If you make a promise the odds are much greater that you’ll do it. If you break a resolution or don’t make a goal, you’ll feel disappointed. If you break a promise, it hurts. Why? It’s just the way we human beings are built (most of us anyway). Your word is your bond, even to yourself. Even more to someone else.
For example, which statement has more impact:
“My goal is to lose 10 pounds by March 1st.”
“I promise to lose 10 pounds by March 1st.”
Keeping promises also gives you a feeling of pride and honor. Who among us doesn’t want to be known as, “Someone of their word”, or “A stand up person”? And, if you need help or support, who wouldn’t want to help someone keep their word?
If your are a patient or friend of mine and you want someone to witness your promise or help keep you accountable, I am more than willing to do so. That, I promise.

Bodyweight and Cancer

Excess body weight accounted for approximately 3.9% of all cancers worldwide in 2012. That trend is not looking to improve as portion sizes are increasing. Another study showed that 94 percent of meals from full service restaurants and 72 percent of fast food meals across all countries studied contained high calories - 600 calories or more.

In 2016, approximately 40% of adults and 18% of children (ages 5-19 years) had excess body weight.

Overweight and obesity has been linked to an increased risk of 13 cancers, including: cancers of the breast (postmenopausal), colon and rectum (colorectal), esophagus, gallbladder, kidney, liver, ovary, pancreas, stomach, and thyroid. Further, recent sudies show a probable increase from being overweight in meningioma, multiple myeloma and cancers of the prostate, mouth, pharynx, and larynx.

Patients seen by a Chiropractor have 55% less likelihood of filling an Opioid prescription!

12,000 New Hampshire residents aged 18-99 with low back pain were studied and found that those who received chiropractic services had less harm and bad effects from medication use, according to a recent study.  They had a significantly lower risk of getting an opioid prescribed.

Back Pain in Teens Linked to Substance Use and Mental Health Issues

Image result for teen pain back free

Teens with back pain are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, and face mental problems such as anxiety and depression, reports a new study. The findings of the study are published in the Journal of Public Health

The findings showed that with increased frequency of pain the proportion of participants reporting increased smoking, drinking, and absence from school.

Key findings:

~ Students that experienced pain more than once a week were around twice as likely to have missed school in the previous term.

14- to-15-year-olds who experienced pain more than once a week were two-to-three times more likely to have drunk alcohol or smoked in the past month than those who rarely or never had pain.

This should be a reminder not to dismiss the teens complaining of pain as 'trivial or fleeting'

Chiropractic care can help.

A study earlier this year showed that teens with chronic back pain undergoing 12 weeks of spinal manipulation (adjustments) and exercise do better than exercise alone. The relief lasted over a year's time.
